Attachment Parenting Playgroup in Canberra

The International Association of Infant Massage is considering running a 10 week Attachment focused supported activity program or playgroup in Term 2 of 2010, and is inviting expressions of interest from individual parents and groups/organisations to participate.

Using the IAIM certified infant massage program as the basic structure, the focus of activities is on using touch and other forms of communication to support parents and babies to establish healthy and secure attachment relationships with each other. In particular, the program uses an evidence-based structured program of massage, games and songs to help build parents understanding of, and responsiveness to, their baby's cues, signals, feelings, etc. The usual elements of discussion & network-building are also included. The program is suitable for parents who are doing OK, as well as those with some struggles.

At this stage, the organisers are just estimating interest in the program and would be keen to hear from any parents you know of who might be interested. Also, because they would like to keep the costs to parents low, it would be wonderful to hear from any organisations who might be interested in sponsoring the program (facilitator fees, venues, catering, massage oils, evaluation,
etc). Please contact Alice Campbell on (02) 6287 3727 or email ten@netspace.net.au for more information.

Hi Emma, I know this is an old post, but do you know of any attachment parenting playgroups in the Canberra area? I'd love to take miss 18mths along to something so she can socialise with others her own age. Cheers :) Amber.

Hi Amber, there's a few

Hi Amber, there's a few playgroups that might suit you, although I don't know of any that are specifically attachment parenting.

Australian Breastfeeding Association runs playgroups on Monday mornings. There's one northside, and the other southside, and they meet on alternating Mondays each fortnight so you can go to both if you want a weekly activity.

Canberra Babywearers are an informal group of parents who meet when they feel like it (some months more often than others). They mostly like to exchange skills about using slings and baby carriers, but also chat about other parenting stuff and just let the kids have a play.

You might also find formalised playgroups attached to the Canberra Montessori School (based in Holder) or Orana Steiner School (in Weston) or Bluegums school (in Dickson).

If you do find a playgroup, please post another comment in case other parents are also looking for one! This is something I hear people asking about quite a lot.
